Water-proof or Damp-proof membrane

I've built some planters on my decking, and before I fill them with soil (and some rubble) I wanted to line the insides with membrane.

Would Damp-proof membrane do the trick? Or should I shell out for some water proof ones?

I'm not planning to line the bottom as the floor already has a weed proof membrane down already, so at least the water can drain away. I just wanted to know what type I need for the sides.

Damp proof is water proof, it's basically a thick, plastic sheet.

As for membrane, I would paint them with a Bitumen based paint.

I would paint them in Bitumen but there is alot to do.. this isn't the only planter. They stretch over 12 metres, so double that for both insides and you are talking 24 metres to paint.
Seems to be cheaper to just buy a 25-metre roll of membrane

Painting is a better option I think.

Lol, I might call it modern art and sell it for a million quid.
