Plenty of woven Geotextiles around like Fastrack G90 is one I've use in the past, they do a whole range of them.

How large is the area.

 

Plenty around all do a job, available from B&Q even Amazon.

For a topping it depends on personal taste and where you are in the country, down here in Wales crushed slate is cheap, so is stone but shingle is very expensive. Decorative bark is an option but like will degrade after 5 years and needs topping up

 

And bark can stain kids, clothing,slimey when wet & cats love using it for a toilet, used geotextile & shingle here to a depth of 100mm .

 

Really inexpensive (cheap)......old foam back carpet...nice!

 

Forgot to mention, several bald lorry tyres and a couple of rusty bikes.

Wickes do a nice pea shingle jumbo bag at £41.99 + delivery, code 224555. I have used 2 bags and it looks good when washed.

If you using shingle, woodbark then a woven geotextile is better to use,it's much stronger,whereas a unwoven geotextile has poor durability.
