power saw 1800w, heater 1200w, lights 200w =3,200w Cable length about 15 metres. Dont mind getting bigger cable in case theres more required.

If he's doing the job, why would you need to know what he needs to use?

15m run of 2.5mm 3-core PVC SWA clipped direct will take 5kW all day.

15m run of 1.5mm 3-core XLPE SWA clipped direct will take 5kW all day.

    10mm SWA?

Because if you know how to specify exactly what you want you are far more likely to pay the right price for the right job. Let's be real. If the client can't accurately specify what they want one of two things may happen. i) The tradesman dishonestly over-specifies to get more cash ii) the tradesman honestly over-specifies "just in case"

6mm I reckon, in case of upgrades. 10mm wouldn't be that much more anyway, what another 20 sovs?

Dont think there is anything wrong in knowing what materials are needed, i always get my elec. jobs done by good qualified sparkies. Thanks Mr.Rusty and most others for sensible replies.

A wise answer, always better to over estimate, (futureproofing) made that mistake in my last workshop.[IMG]
