The window is getting badly stuck
on the plastic part underneath it.

    Please see photo.

It is hard to open the window because its getting
stuck on this plastic and the window has to be banged
    shut.

What does this plastic bit do? How can we fix this?

Any help would be more than welcome!

Is the plastic block actually the problem:eek:, how long has this been happening, just started, or some time?
Have you check hinge screws to see they are tight, unlikely but may have worked loose alllowing window to drop.
Is there any cracks in brickwork above window, any sagging/bowing of top frame of window, photo would help.

Yes it is just a guide, as KIAB says. Chances are the problem is faulty or worn hinges, check them first, if the window frame is out of square that could be expensive.
A bit of lubrication (WD 40) on the block may help temp.

  4. Harps, the block just supports the window when it's closed and ensures it's sitting nicely square in the frame and not sagging so the locks & seals etc work properly.

The fact it's now rubbing hard on that block is as said above - your opener must be sagging a bit, or is out of square. What type of hinges do you have on that window - any adjustment on them, are any screws loose, or are any links obviously worn and floppy? (Grab the opener, and try rocking it up and down - any obvious loose movement or clunks?)

Post a photo of the hinges if you can, and we can help further.

Agree. Take the block out for now. They are a lazy way to ensure the window closes square.
Proper toeing and heeling would mean no need for wedge risers.

    Mr. HandyAndy - Really

Thank you for all the replies!

There are no cracks that I can see.
The windows were fitted a few months
ago so maybe this window was not fitted
    well?
It is a large window and special strong
hinges were supposed to be used to hold
the weight, I am not sure if they have
    fitted these or not.

I will get a picture of the hinges.

  8. Fitted just a few months ago?!

Simple cure - get them back to fix it...
