    Hi everyone,

I am installing a new kitchen and have ordered custom cut oak worktops. I am also installing dark oak solid wood floor and wanted to dye the worktops the same colour.

I was going to use wood dye and then danish oil:
    Rustins wood dye - http://www.rustins.eu/Details.asp?ProductID=817
    Rustins Danish Oil - http://www.rustins.eu/Details.asp?ProductID=743

However I have read a few threads saying that worktops should be left in their natural colour. But I am not sure if this is referring to staining only or dying as well.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks, Oli.

You can dye worktops, but remember that with some woods, the staves have a mixture of colours and tones. And by dying these worktops will make the worktop one consistent colour.

I had to dye my walnut worktop. A small piece was order from a different supplier and the colour did not look anything like the original worktop i had. It was dyed using liberon wood dye, this was a water base acrylic dye.

For oak however, the colour of the staves are very consistent in colour, so I see no problem in this. If you have a scrap piece left over, try a sample to make sure you are happy with the overall colour.

Assuming they are untreated when you get them, I think I would be doing a trial run on the underside first to make sure the stain takes consistently on all the staves making the top - it may not. If it doesn't work, nothing lost!
