I work in the DRI (now London Road Community Hospital) Although most of it is now being demolished ( I work in the newest part that was called the Grove. Been an interesting week watching the Wilderslowe Tower block (nurses accommodation) being demolished. Within the next few weeks the old A&E block is coming down too.
I was in the bone ward for 3 weeks back in the 80's mainly with bikers in traction with bolts through their limbs.
All the specialist wards are now up at the Royal Derby Hospital now (was on tv last night, first part of a four part series "Superhospital" (ITV 9pm Thursdays) Know a few people featured in the series
Yesterday I dismantled a trade stand in 2 1/2 hours and got paid £200 plus travel. My normal day rate is £150-£250.
Nice work if you can get it eh Is there a particular type of job which you still get some satisfaction from? I don't mean that in a patronising way just wondered what a 'nice day' would involve money aside?
Oh yes, basically I'm a scenic carpenter and sometimes that involves a lot of technical boring stuff and sometimes it's the most interesting job in the world, I've met a load of celebrities and I've met some great people from lorry drivers to cooks to film stars. The joining wood to wood bit is what it is. A nice day should be Sunday when I travel down to the tent, see a few mates, stay in a hotel, make sure the set is clean for junior and go home.
Is your current role as a scenic carpenter a recent thing, or did it run alongside the more usual jobs a carpenter would do? Just interested
I was doing all sorts of stuff and went to drama college aged 29 to specialise in set building, the domestic stuff is a sideline.
That's cool Chippie, sounds very interesting. Thanks for sharing Nice to know that someone has a different take on a day to day basis of 'carpentry and wood working'.
