I have just bought a dovetail jig, lumberjack dtj300 and i need a 1/2" bit/1/4"shank with a bearing so it dosen't foul the fingers. I have an erbauer 1/2" router with a 30mm ID /83MM OD.guide bush I have a 1/2" doveatail bit which has a 1/4"shank but no bearing,so no good,is it possible to buy a cutter and remove the bearing,as toolstation have got bits with bearings from as little as £3.24. If its not possible i will have to buy one which will cost £12.20. Or can you recommend anywhere that sells a guide bush that is 12.7mm ID/83mm OD. Ive attached an image of my base.
I'd be looking to see if Erbauer sell a 12.7mm guide bush for your router. Why is the 30mm guide bush in your pic upside down ? It also looks very very narrow to be 30mm.
83mm seem rather large, some trend ones I have here, are only 60mm overall diameter. Could look at a Trend uni sub base, would allow you to use standard bushes then. http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/trend/content/content_detail.php?record_type=Knowledge&id=15885 https://www.trenddirectuk.com/unibase
Its not upside down, that's the locking nut in the center that's probably throwing you off, pics from another angle with actual sizes.
I would fit a sub base, then you can use 60mm diameter bushes as used by Dewalt,Trend & a few others, makes life a lot easier. Trouble is, there is no standard size for router bushes, Bosch have their own system, at least Dewalt & Trend have got it right in my opinion.
Here is my diameter in pic. Just a couple of questions regarding the trend unibase. Is the center of it to accept guide bushes 30mm OD? Do trend do a 12.7mm guide bush? cheers.
The Trend GB/5/S sub can be specially drill for you router. I use many bushes, including the Porter Cable bushes. https://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/product/GB_5_S/special_sub_base_drilled_to_order.html
I'm confued the Lumberjack dtj300 has a 1/2" combe plate, & it's identical to the SIP dovetail jig I have, that has same 1/2" combe plate & uses a 11.1mm (7/16") guide bush & a 7/16in Dovetail Cutter with Bearing Guide. http://www.sip-group.com/store/category/215/product/01583.aspx http://www.midlandstoolsupplies.co.uk/7-16-router-cutter https://www.wealdentool.eu/rons-tips/guide-bushes/guide-bushes-part-one-basics/
Good company. And the SIP combe plates are still available, so gives a few other dovetail sizes you can cut. http://www.midlandstoolsupplies.co.uk/sip-dovetail-jig
I will look at that cutter,i just thought that as it's only 11.1125mm and not 12.7mm that i would need this one from trend? https://www.trenddirectuk.com/c162x...yDr51tXqS8oocCpXm_wZCOy2JtG47BYBoCLokQAvD_BwE
So i either, buy the trend cutter that is 12.7mm for my dovetail jig £12.20 Or buy the 7/16" cutter £10.99 7/16" template? £16.45 Im going to pop to toolstation now and look at this cutter to see if i can remove the bearing as that would be even cheaper https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Po...Bits/sd2579/Router+Bit+Template+Cutter/p12799
so if i have to buy the 7/16" cutter to use for the 1/2" template, wont it be to small or have i got to but the 7/16" template as well?
Watch this video, explains better than I can. A lot of peeps don't realise you can make sliding dovetails with the jig. Using a bearing cutter, you don't need to use the guide bush,as bearing is the guide,if you use cutter with no bearing then you need the 11.1mm bush.
Cheers KIAB,i'm going to order the 7/16" cutter now. And thanks for the video link also. I was only intending to go for the cheaper option and get a bearing cutter.
Yes ive got a 1/4" collet so just get the 7/16" cutter? One last question How do you work out the depth? Mine says, DIA of router base 2 + 2x thickness of workpiece - cutter DIA 2 is yours the same calculation?
