Hello, I am having a small extension. Just finishing the roof off. Would you be happy with this work? Is it of sufficient quality? I am no building professional, it just looks like a witches cottage or a crooked house with the slate work. I could easily be wrong and it be me expecting too much. Please look at the photos and I would really appreciate opinions. Thanks
Does look a bit hit & miss but the slates do look rustic and not overly flat. I would have personally cut the batterns back a bit more so the ends are at least 50mm in from the edge to prevent rotting from moisture ingress from the pointing that should be put there eventually.
Just had a good look at that its terrible. A plumber did that surely. What the main house like? the neighbours?
Thanks both for your opinions. My house is old, but I never asked for it to look like that. Original slate roof which was installed a few years ago certainly doesn't. Would you complain or what do i do? They should be finishing it off tomorrow and I am in two minds to either accept it as is or make it good by whatever means.
Get it ripped off. The apprentice must have done that. Don't show me pictures of the muck work when they get to it, I will probably vomit. Don't take my word for any of this, wait for the roofers on here to see it. I have been involved and around roofers all my life and that is bad.
The tiles kick up. The bonds aren't in line. Its not level from left to right. shocking work. DIY at best
Anyone wanna mention that pointing Maybe reclaimed bricks ? But even so ....... Must have been that hamster again (but that is random, for sure)
As an after thought to my ranting........ If you have got a mate of a mate in to do you a favour at mates rates cash in hand etc and it doesn't leak then live with it.
That’s atrocious, you will get the odd “kicker” with natural slate but a decent roofer knows how to handle this, probably cheap Chinese slate? Should have really used a slate and a half up the verge, a half is acceptable but there clearly not all exactly the same size? Are the slates all the same width? they don’t look it, none of the bonds are in line Sorry to say it’s rubbish and needs ripping off and starting again
I would say that the price is high for what it is. Certainly not a mate. I haven't paid a penny for it yet. But obviously due completion either tomorrow or day after. Longer term, if I refused to pay until made better, and he refused, went to court....where do I stand if the roof is indeed watertight? Thanks guys
Are the existing walls cavity? If they are there should be trays installed as the exterior wall becomes an interior wall below roof level.
Right, as its an extension, I can take it that the construction of the roof is new then, built by carpenters/builders?
Current house is solid brick, but extension is cavity. Cavity trays have been put around windows etc but not where the roof meets the brick. Is there a requirement to?
