Hi All, we have two doors that are sticking on our new carpet. A handyman has trimmed the bottom but they are still sticking. He says he can't take any more off the bottom because there are some panel pins in the door and his plane will not cut through them. Is there any way to trim these doors down a further 5-10mm or so do you think, and if so, how would it be done. Thanks
A track saw or circular saw would slice through panel pins no problem but agree, if using a plane, these would severely damage the blade Mind you, if they’ve been trimmed already and still need another 10-15 mm off, then using a plane is a slow method of attack Was it a hand plane or electric plane the guy was using ? Are these hollow panel doors by any chance ?
What about using rise n fall hinges might be enough to clear carpet. If a cheaper hollow door, there ain't many mm's left for trimming, might end setting in a new piece of timber.
That’s more the reason as I suspected Your handy man guy would have known that the framing on these doors is slim on all 4 edges - around 20/25 mm That’s why there’s a small tolerance that the manufacturers recommend can be trimmed - 6 mm perhaps stated on the leaflet tucked in with doors But ...... your handy guy can easily cut off 15/20/40 mm, whatever, and simply replace bottom batten Couple pins either end then glue and clamp up Ok, more work, it’s gonna cost you more but it’s an easy job for anyone that’s slightly competent in diy tasks Me thinks he can’t be bovvered with the job in all honestly
Tell your handyman to cut the bottoms of the doors with a jacksaw rather than use a plane. He may have to glue and pin a batten back into the hollow bottom of the door to return the strength.
