I've been a carpenter for 12 years but finally got myself some carpenters pencils and a sharpener in a set from Travis today for £6.

I can't get the pencils to sharpen properly.
I have to use so much effort to get the bloody thing to even sharpen a minute bit.

Am I being a absolute idiot or no?

I look forward to the replies. Go easy on me

If you use one of them you are a cowboy not a carpenter.

Only bought them as they were cheap. Think the sharpener will be binned and go back to the Stanley knife

You should have bought the 'inexpensive' one's as they are much easier to sharpen.:D

Cheap @ £6. Those Red pencils and Sharpener :p look like pound shop specials.

Only use Blackedge and a craft knife to sharpen here. :)

Preferably a 4H pencil and a pencil sharpener.

They often have similiar sets in Aldi for around £2 - 6 pencils and a sharpener. Bright yellow so easy to find and the sharpener does work to a degree but, often need to shave a bit more pencil with Stanley as it doesn’t sharpen evenly

Sharpener also has an abrasive strip on one side if you need a finer point

They’re ok for rough work but the lead (yeah know it’s not actually lead anymore) is 3/4 mm thick so if not trimmed, you get a thick line which could throw off your accuracy if you cut on wrong side of mark

Can’t beat a Screwfix pencil or a dozen even better

I have one of those pencil sharpeners. I don't use it for pencils, but for sticks of French chalk...Brilliant for writing/marking on surfaces such as brickwork or steel plate.

The screwfix pencils are better than the IKEA pencils. Although when we shop my Mrs ends up with a few dozen in her handbag

Pencils? Sharpening? Are we still living in the 19th century? Bic 0.7 mm pop ups every time.
