We are just in the middle of refurbishing our house and we have the electrician in at the moment but when we have been cleaning the joists we have noticed that some of the cabling that has been pulled through the drilled holes in the joists has split exposing the wires. Should we pull the electrician on this or will it be ok ? Is this acceptable ? It’s not just on one wire it’s on 3 different ones that we have seen so far. Also is it ok for cables to be next to central heating pipes ?

Can you post a photo to show how badly the wires are exposed? Yes you should mention this to the electrician.

Generally, it isn't a problem having cables run next to central heating pipes but a better approach would be to clip it to the joists away from the pipes.

  3. He has what you call,"burned" the cables by pulling them through the holes in the joists too quick and probaly too many cables in the hole.

That is not acceptable and the damaged cables cables should be replaced.

Hi Emma no it’s not alright. This damage is caused by friction burns probs due to the holes. Being too small for the cables. Cable should not be run near to central heating pipes.

First picture is of cable burn where the cable has been pulled so fast that it has melted the insulation.
The rest of the pictures show damage caused by sharp objects.
The cables close to the heating pipes are acceptable, though it would have been better to run them over to one side to miss the pipes altogether.

Thank you for your quick response. Exactly my partners response to seeing it but we don’t know what to do as it’s been problems from the start giving simple instructions with distances of sockets and switches that everyone has been wrong. We feel so fussy for complaining but at the end of the day we are the customer and we have to look at them feeling peeved off we didn’t say anything at the time. We live in a tiny house it’s not rocket science. If we change electricians now surely someone else won’t be keen on finishing someone else’s work and is it not morally right to pay him for what he has already done.... this bit is only a days work as we paid him for last month last week

Your paying him to do a job. He isn't doing it properly. Take it up with who ever he is registered with.

An answer to the last Q would be best plan. You would have to get the work inspected by whatever scheme there with

Do you suggest we get another electrician in ? Should he be paid for the work he has done ?

As others have said regarding the cables, but, 'cleaning the joists' , I'm rather intrigued as to what that actually means tbh:confused:, thanks in advance.

You don't need to get another spark in, tell him the work is not good enough so he can a) sort it out or b) tell him you will take it up with napit if he doesn't. That work is totally unacceptable. Makes me wonder what else he has done wrong.
