Old squeeky floorboard screw length for into joists?

Ideally what length mm should the screws be for fixing squeakily floor boards?

This is on an older house (60s) i've assessed where all the radiator pipes etc are, now need to get the correct length screws.

I assume longer than the existing nails that are there and leave the nails and put the screws next to them?
Had Reisser Cutter screws recommended, as ideally don't want any splitting or need to drill a pilot hole.

Many thanks for any opinions :)

Reisser Cutters are ideal - however, I would still suggest a clearance hole in the board as you want to pull it down and screws are full threaded. A 40mm should be adequate in 4 or 4.5 diameter for standard 18/20mm boards.

Cutters will create their own cuontersinks so ne need to worry about that.

Just make 100% sure you know EXACTLY where all pipes and cables run.

Thank you, so something like this would be fine?

6x40 are overkill and need a 3pt driver.

4.5 diameter or maybe 5 will do it.

Too thin - or to say I would not use them. Do you have a local supplier rather than Amazon though? Where in the country are you?

UK and it seems only really Toolstation do them rather than SF.

Is this the size you were thinking? Reisser Cutter Pozi Screw 4.5 x 40mm

Apologies i'm not un to scratch with all these screw naming conventions.

    Thank you for your help.

Surely it would be best to get 50mm length ones which are not fully threaded. Or does the quality of Reisser Cutter outweigh having to drill a clearance hole?

You can go for the 50mm - juyst check pipes and cables. Just that if the boards have been down for over 50 years they will be very dry and even using a Reisser Cutter could cause a split. Althoigh checking https://reisser.co.uk/shop/cutter/ shows that even at 50mm they are fully threaded.

Just my preference would be the clearance hole in the board.

What about these, best of both worlds?

Surprised KIAB has not commented on this thread though!
