Hiya, just decorating and found this board behind the radiator. Just wondered if anyone knew what it was?
Thank you. What was it used for? It seems to be in a few pieces . Was a bit worried it might be asbestos
It's a low-cost and flexible sheet material normally 3mm thick. Normally gets used for lining floors before vinyl etc. Looks like they might have used it to fill in a chimney cavity maybe? Doesn't contain asbestos. (Just my opinions, I am not a pro, but I am sure one will be along soon)
Was also extensively used in the early 80's to cover up gorgeous victorian panel doors to give them a more modern look. (for the time).
Thanks very much. It's under a window so no chimney cavity. It's also got tinfoil on to reflect heat.
Yes..........hardboard , could be 3mm, 6mm or 9mm thick. If you remove it, it will have the firms name that installed it written on the back, probably Bodgeit & Scarper Ltd!
Is there an air brick on the other side of the wall? It could be an air vent that has been blocked up?
Foil covered hardboard, if radiator was in a bay window then it was probably put there in an attempt to reflect heat from radiator back into the room rather than going into the wall.
Agree - Has to be foil covered hardboard. Very commonly used to reflect heat away from wall into room.
