At least the cross pieces have been well fitted! This is what I was suggesting you need to fit ... Use the hangers, you could go for 44 with some sanding, or use the 47 and put a 2mm packer in there to make it tight.
That's exactly what I'm going to do. I'll get the 47mm I think, thats only 1mm each side, it'll probably be fine as it is. If not will those shims you mentioned do the job? Thanks again for your help.
They should be tight to stop twisting, and there is heat local, so a 2mm on one side will be fine. Screw hangers to existing in rebates if you want to keep perfect level and when fitted, screw new timber to hangers too. If you find the hanger is too high - shave/chisel a touch off the bottom of the timber. If too low, just put a shim in the bottom of the hanger. And another tip. Loose fit the boards and with a decent marker, draw out the pipe runs including 25+ mm margin each side and write what it is! Then there will be no excuse for screwing through. If you lift some of my carpets, it looks like a graffiti artist has been there with comments about pipes, cable runs, &c.
Hi Guys. Its been nice to see the help offered regarding this problem 50 years since I was on the sites.(plumber) I did loose track of the comments I admit. But WELL DONE all of you, YEA mark them damn pipes. Take care gents Johnny M
I marked some pipes years ago and my customer came in to look at what I'd done. He thought for a bit, and said "What are "Pee One Pez"?" (Read it out loud). I said, "We called them 'PIPES'!"(Which is what I'd written on the lines I'd marked). One of my better laughs over the years. He was great. He spent 15 minutes with his mates the evening after I'd fitted his new loo's soft close seat, lifting it up and letting it go back down, looking on in wonder. He said it reminded him of 'Soft Eject' on a cassette tape player.
It wasn't rocking, it was sagging (and probably rocking a bit) that was the problem. It was the 800mm+ span and the fact that the notches were too big and went under the edge of the boards. The worst board was effectively being supported by the 22mm pipes.
Hi Guys It is interesting when more in our appentiship and later working for years on different sites/jobs . What we learned of all trade as we watched . We take it for granted that all folk have been thru this learning curve. I have friends WAY up in ministry circles. If you gave them a hammer and a nail . The nail would bent and the hammer would break. I often wonder what those little jobs around the home would of cost us if we had paid for then. Best of luck to the DIY guys giving it a go Johnny M
Seconded. The help given in this thread has been amazing and very much appreciated. I now understand far more than I did at the start and I cringe at some of the (what I now know to be daft) comments I made, but they stayed with me. If the pubs were open I'd buy you all a pint ;-)
