Hi all , we’ve just had a home bar built in our cottage , it’s oak T&G I’m looking to add a slight light oak colour to it , not really wanting to use a stain I’m thinking more of a wax brush on / polish off type product anyone have any recommendations for a suitable product / method to use please ?
Coloured Briwax of whatever flavour you favour, apply a bit like polishing shoes.... Work it in with a soft brush and then buff it up.
Osmo Top Oil Clear Satin. Remember wax doesn't like water spills or wet beer mugs etc, used many, many 5ltr cans of Briwax Antique Brown back in the 80's when I specialised in stripped Antique Pine Furniture. You need to seal the surface with a product much more robust than wax. Sadolin PV67 used on badminton courts, bar tops and dance floors may be a little over the top but decent sealers are available.
Thanks for your detailed reply do I wax the top first then apply the sealer or do I just use the sealer alone , will the osmo top oil clear satin seal it ?
You cannot apply any sealer over a waxed surface...you really need to do more research as this isn't a 'quick fix'. The top needs a sealer not wax, the front needs a cellulose sanding sealer pre wax, apply the wax with 0000 wire wool in the grain direction let dry and buff to a sheen using a shoe brush then repeat the process again, waxing the bar top will be a giant mistake!
I'd probably have Laquered it.......... Done an oak window cill in my bathroom. Had a lot of sun on it and so the finish is a bit faded now but when it was first done it looked awesome.......... well, very nice anyway.
It's a bar top so would more about choosing the correct and suitable product that is robust enough for the intended purpose.
Thanks so much , I’m doing plenty of research and taking note of all you say I won’t make no mistakes , I’m getting what I need shortly thanks for your advice it’s really appreciated
Will this do for ya? https://www.wood-finishes-direct.co...MItpHq0Zno8QIV1vhRCh1MSgugEAQYASABEgLaevD_BwE
It depends on if you are looking for a clear finish or more of an antique finish. For an antique look I would recommend a Fiddes wax like https://priorypolishes.co.uk/product-category/brands/fiddes/ It is really easy to apply and buff but this is not water resistant, so you may be better with a natural varnish or sealant before waxing I hope this helps James
NOOOOOOOOO !!! Don't go anywhere near oak with wire wool unless you want the timber to turn a nice shade of black ....... I'd personally forget about waxes and sealers - and just oil it with Tung Oil. Brings out the grain beautifully and makes the timber waterproof.
For an oak home bar, consider using furniture wax for a slight light oak color enhancement without staining. Brush on and polish off the wax for a suitable finish.
