Hello everyone, Would appreciate some advice: we want to repair the wall of the 19th century house. It has old pebble-dash rendering with cracks and at one corner rendering fell off completely exposing the bricks. We are convinced to replace all rendering underneath the bay window (from one side to another, circa 4-5 sq.m.) and were given the following options by different tradesmen (to apply after pebble-dash is removed): 1. Bitumen coating on bricks followed by sand and cement rendering; 2. SBR coating on bricks followed by sand and cement rendering; 3. Silicone based render with mesh (ridiculously expensive). None of them mentioned lime. The damp problem is not massive, but last (very wet) winter mould formed in both corners. Has anyone had experience with solid walls and what would you advice?
I would go with option 3, but just use standard render over the mesh. It will inevitably crack, that’s then the time to invest in the expensive silicone to repair the cracks.
I’d leave them as they are but try and dry them out. Once you apply something like bitumen or sealant there’s no going back if further problems occur. Apply mesh direct and render onto that.
Is there anyone close to Ealing who is interested in this job? We discovered a crack in the brick wall that needs to be repaired before rendering is done.
