I am building a magnetic switch but I need some ferrous parts and its proving to be impossible to fabricate or purchase anything suitable.

I bought some 8mm square mild iron bar and tried to cut it to lengths of 10mm using a hack saw and file, but as shown in the picture the result is rubbish.

The cut faces need to be square, true and flush.

How can I fabricate something like this ?

Or where could I get it made without it costing a fortune ?

Or is there anything existing that I could buy, even if the dimensions are slightly different ?

    I need a quantity of 18.

You would have to enquire about the tolerances, otherwise mrft's offer will be the better way forward.

Meet up at a Screwfix branch wearing a red rose in your lapel !!!!!!!!!!!

@free_flyer Do you know anyone with a chop saw, metal turning lathe or milling machine even a bandsaw and linisher?

    Thanks alll

I looked at the eBay item and it’s priced at £4.74ea so 18 of them would cost £85.32 !!!

They also state “Cutting tolerances are between -3mm to +3mm.
Some material may have notches or burghs as a result from cutting and handling”

Work has a small lathe but it’s only a 3 jaw chuck, we tried but it didn’t work as the part wobbled all over the place

Work has a linisher but the grinding disc is quite rough. I got better results with a file.

Work has a bandsaw but it won’t cut material as hard as mild iron

Work has a small milling machine, we tried but it struggled and is only a very small basic milling machine (like a pillar drill)

I never realised how difficult it would be to get a small metal cube !!!

I have a shop on Etsy, search for Handmade West Workshop and drop me a message. We can sort it out from there and it definitely won’t be £85 and 3mm off
