    Imperial Vs Metric

When Sam Whitworth made the first accurate machine thread, from which every screw since has been made, the angle was 55° when everyone knew that a triangular thread should be 60° so BSW (Whitworth) were the only threads cut at 55° and al other threads have been made at 60°. Sam Whitworth got it...

    products to measure mitres

One of these would prove useful. http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp?dyncharset=UTF-8&howMany=5&searchText=24972&x=15&y=2 This is an improvement of the original Canadian MAC mitre board which turns a circular saw into a radial arm saw (or router) I saw a demonstration of...

    tac wise

I bought a Rapesco (Takwise) brad nailer a few years ago. It is now hung up in the workshop as a warning not to waste money on such carp again. The pins wouldn't go to full depth but left approx 1/8" standing proud. Rapesco insisted that only their own brads would work in it which were more...

    Table Saw

The only reason the Xcaliber will take dado blades is because it is a copy of the established American Unisaw much loved of Norm Abrams. All power tools made in the EU have to comply with EU safety legislation. The only reason the Trend T10 & T11 routers have a click on click off switch is...

    sawing

Try a Japanese saw. They cut on the pull stroke instead of pushing the blade so always cut straight. It's like pulling a length of string which straightens it while it will always bend when pushed.

    good first router?

My suggestion was based on experience over the years. I have bought plenty of budget tools in the past and soon had to replace them with better quality therefore costing more in the end. I have also bought some cheap tools which have lasted well and were worth double what I paid for them...

    Best Tool Belt?

    which sliding mitre saw?

Hi BA 1st time I've looked here for a week. It is on the ** site but their web price is £235 but that is only to make the price cut look better on the TV shopping channel which is 655 on Sky and 661 on Telewest. It wouldn't be any good for daily use but great for occasional use. I thought I...

    good first router?

You are unlikely to find anything suitable for that price. You need a 1/2" router for panel raising which must be in a table. I doubt if any cheap models come with fine height adjustment. You would soon curse the waste of money if you get one that is unsuitable for everything you are likely to...

    Router Template Guide Size

My dovetail jig uses a 7/16" guide bush suppied withthe jig and I also have 16mm & 30mm bushes. Someone using the routerforum in USA is constantly poining to his use or a 40mm bush for his template work. When making your own templates it's easier to use metric cutters with a metric bush or...

    which sliding mitre saw?

I have used a small 8" sliding saw for some years and recently had some 3" fence posts and 6x2s to cut at an angle. I was going to doit with a hand saw until I saw a 10" sliding mitre saw on one of the shopping channels. At £86 I bought it just for the one job. It was shown with a 290x75...

    Threads (pun) in general

I still prefer BSW (Whitworth) for strngth. Sam Whitworth may have made a mistake when making the very first machine thread at 55° instead of the later 60° used by all other threads but his mistake is a much stronger thread. I bought a concrete sectional garage about 10 years ago which still...

    M6

Looking at my newest Zeus book, metric revision 1972, I found the ISO metric threads and surprise surprise a 6mm thread is 6mm. Whatever next?

can someone give me some advice please.

I have always used an 8" sliding mitre saw in the workshop but had some larger timbers to cut, including some 3" fence posts. I was thinking of getting a 10" sliding saw then saw one on sale on the yes661 shopping channel. As I only needed it for one job I decided to buy one. £86 for 290 x 75...
