Sigh - for my project I need a few M8 x 90mm bolts. (80mm is too short and 100mm will hit another objkect). Why do screwfix, toolstation and B&Q stock M8 bolts in every length except 90mm?
Yeah, that might be only option as I need to fit them tonight. Then perhaps order the correct size from Amazon and replace them later. Can't wait for Amazon to open a trade counter!
So you’ve now got a grinder, buy a metal cutting disc, wind nut onto bolt first, clamp into workbench/vice and then cut off what you need Norton thin slitting disc, cheap and cuts very well
That's what I was thinking Dave, but I wonder if after cutting the bolt like this I would still be able to get the nut off or on? Not sure if the cut will be clean enought for that?
The nut will come off easily, an hacksaw cut will leave less rag, put the nut on first then cut, if you want use a metal file to file off any rag and then unscrew the nut it will go back on easily, the link shows two nuts being used but one will do. https://www.familyhandyman.com/workshop/cutting-threaded-rod/
Read my post again geez ..... Wind nut on first Cut Remove nut This will straighten the thread at cut point if a little deformed Thin metal slitting disc is what you want Less than 5 seconds per cut Of course, as above, could use a hacksaw but you’ve now got a shiny new power tool so why go backwards eh ! Eg. https://www.screwfix.com/p/norton-metal-cutting-disc-4-115mm-x-1-x-22-2mm/8023v https://www.toolstation.com/flat-metal-slitting-disc/p35514 (check disc specs first though for compatibility in instruction manual)
This is more less what I'd do. Wind Nut on, hacksaw down to size, file the end to a chamfer and unscrew nut.
Thanks guys, worked a treat - put a 1mm cutting disc in the grinder and chopped the 110mm bolts down to 90mm.
