New opening created in gable end brick wall. Had to get planning permission for this as its a flat. Wanted to create to opening so get better view over countryside. Current window in kitchen, nice view but cant see around fully. Thought this was a good idea to get new opening. Think I will order a replacement window for the bathroom , which is to the left hand so both windows look similar. Gable end prior to fitting window opening. Builder did the brickwork, I made the temporary frame using CLS timber and OSB3 board until new window is ordered. Single leaf lintel fitted over opening. A lot of the bricks had to be cut out as the perp joints were all over. Opening size created for best fit. Slight crack on right-hand side, builder said it was OK not to use acrow props. Did prop up using timber prop. Definitely going to use acrow for internal wall. Window is about 1250mm wide. Row of half soldiers were laid using old bricks with mortar. Used acid brick cleaner to clean over anything off bricks. Inside kitchen. Waiting for next week to break through, its a wimpy no-fines construction so quite thick walls to break through. SE advised to use 2-3 pre-stressed lintels for internal wall.
Think its going to be worth it just for the view. This is the view from the ground. Planning on starting next week to break through as people in downstairs flat are out for a week.
Can't wait to start breaking through... Have already removed the wall paper from that section of the wall this evening. Quite thick with lots of layers of paint a Stanley knife helped lift the edges and i was able to peel bits off at a time.
Completed the opening last year. Just getting round to uploading the pictures. Initially 2 x concrete lintels were placed in the openings. The opening was made smaller width ways as the new wall dimensions enable whole opening to be seen. The brickwork from outside was made smaller to one side. Lintel openings made. Hardwork taking out the stone using SDS breakers and SDS Max breaker. Steel plate bedded on both ends with a 200mm bearing. A 140x100mm concrete lintel was placed behind and set in using solid engineering bricks. A steel beam fitted to the front end. Its is 152x152mm this was specified by SE. Packed in a few points using bricks. Mortar 3:1 was filled and pushed tight into the voids to fully pack out the beam. Fitted in thermalite blocks inside the web of steel, just used foam and easy job to do. Made up a timber infill to the RH side to close up opening. The tops and reveals will be boarded out at later stage. Window now fitted.
Just one thing.Do you think you might get fumes from kitchen extractor if light or window is open and wind blowing that way, sort of recycling back into the kitchen
Because its right on the corner and exposed I did brick up the extractor and reposition it on the opposite side. Regulary flapping in high winds.
Ahh. So sorted. Yes,we have the same and its also a right flapper when windy. Im definitely no expert but looks a real pukka job.Take care,Graham
Hi, Nice job. Is the lintel visible from outside? Is that why you fitted it? Also, what is the thermalite for?
There's a single leaf catnic on the outside to carry the brickwork. Thermalites were used to fill in the steel web, had lots of blocks left over. So can plaster staraifht onto blocks. Window reveals will be boarded.
