What are these things sticking out of my chimney?

Discussion in 'Builders' Talk' started by Devlin Thornicroft, Oct 12, 2021.

  1. Hi all

I am renovating my Victorian house and thinking about how to tackle the chimneys. I noticed these things (see attached). They look like pipes but I can’t be sure. Any ideas?

    Thanks

gas lighting. i bet they'll be lead gas pipe someone under the floorboards

  5. Thanks guys. I am in the process of removing the floorboards and I did spot a random pipe leading into the main bedroom. I haven't lifted enough to see where it's going but have this feeling that is where it'll lead to.

Presumably I need a plumber to come take a look, get rid of them?

If it is gas light then it’s probably lead. Also very probably disconnected when electricity was installed. Just trace back to check whether it is dead and if so rip it out and weight it in

Or you could get them working again, lovely gentle light, far better than the LED searchlights.

  10. Thanks guys. No, I don't think I want this decrepit old technology in my house.

    Hi
I stripped lots of lead pipe out during my plumbing days
    1949 on lol
    Both water and gas.
Strip it out take it straight to the scrap man.
As Jonthanc says Worth a bit now
