    Hi,

I’m after some advice on prepping my garden gates for repainting.

Painted them with Cuprinol garden shades when they were made a few years ago, however I must have skimped on the prep work as large patches have now got the sticky resin/sap coming through to the surface.

What would be the best thing to use to clean it up and seal it to prevent this happening again, even if it takes stripping them back to bare wood.

    Thanks

If it's really bad strip it off back to the wood, white spirit will dissolve the sap by wiping over with a scouring pad, some sappy knots I have removed in the past by drilling them out and filling the hole with a 2 part filler, sealing the knots 2 x with Zinsser BIN is a good move as this will lock the knots. Using a superior paint than Garden Shades to finish your gates would be advised so take a look at Dulux Trade Opaque, You Tube Video available online
