...so the "usual" method is to drill the hole, wire the transformer, post it through the hole and shove in the light leaving the transformer resting on the plasterboard. My understanding is that the xfmr needs to be fixed (ie screwed to the joist) but also accessible (to replace when it fails) but you cant have both unless you count lifting the floorboards. There must be a better way (I know, GU10s, but ignoring that).
The usual method is fine ,tx on plasterbord ,why would you wish to mount it on a flamable surface ? If the tx is liable to be violent disturbance then yeah iy would benefit from being secured ,though I can't ever recall a case where fixing has been necessary. It's a matter of common sense .
And if the tx pops, which they sometimes do 'usual method' makes for easy replacement as they fit nicely through the hole. good luck unscrewing one through a 61mm hole should it need to be replaced.

dont forget to leave enough slack in wiring, to enable transformer to drop thro hole, esp if supplying more than one lamp!
I actually agree with the "usual" method, but like I said, my understanding is that they need to be fixed - as do JBs (and then cables clipped to secure them just before they enter the box) Do you all do the same with JBs?

Just poke the transformer up the through the hole followed by a mini JB and fit the light. Just make sure everything is pushed away from the fitting. Job Done collect the cash :^O

Job Done collect the cash :^O ...because it isn't hard and I don't just want to collect the cash and walk away. I can't do that - it just isn't me. I believe that there is a good fitting idea out there that will improve on the "shove it up" technique. Anyone care to share the idea? Steve
