the hydrulic post hole digger is an excellent bit of kit which i have used numerous times and where there is alot of flint etc makes easy work of the bore holes prefer it to the large auger drill type everytime

Go for the one man hydraulic. The ones you hold (one or two man) are difficult to use if there are any tree roots / stones around. The hydraulic ones are however awkward to move around if you are on a slope / rough ground.

I have got both types stuck in the ground before (caught up in tree routes) - they only way to free them was pulling upwards on the auger with a front shovel on a tractor!

    thanks for the replies

the land is fairly flat, running either side of a 4m wide not very deep stream (brook). it flooded last week so is a tad muddy.

there are areas between trees, 30 holes, an area next to a small rock face, flint and mud, 60 holes and a grassed flat area, sogging wet, 30 holes, and a few more holes for luck and 8 holes right on the waters edge..
the holes wont all be dug at the same time, probably over a period of 3 to 4 weeks....
they are to take 4inch posts...
