I have been to look at a job, which is easily over a 50 grand job and would be nice to get especially with things being a bit quite. My only concern is I’ve found out about another company that I know is really struggling and have laid of dozens of blokes off is also been and looked at it. To my surprise they have turned it down. This now raises a few concerns as what do they know that I don't. One of my mates have just been round who works for a big maintenance company and when I told him he said straight away the reason will be its full of asbestos. What I want to know is do any of you ever ask these questions to customers and who’s reasonable to have the building checked and at who’s expense.

I wonder to what extent it has asbestos, is it just the facia boards & have they got to be worked on. If its more than this then I would think the owner would call a specialist to deal with it. If you got someone in you would have to pay & added on the quote but you would be out of pocket if the work fell through. Shame it you have to turn that sort of figure down.

Just price as normal based on a report being carried out before you commence your work.

Failing that just sub it out!

    Nah, just kidding.

    It's a serious business this asbestos *. 20 a week I've heard :(

Just ask the person you are dealing with. Its definatly worth checking out before you get in too deep.

Is this a 50 grand electrical job? If this is part of a building project where you are a sub- contractor. The main contractor should provide you with an asbestos register.
Also all building are now required to have asbestos surveys done that were built before 2000 I think. Will look it up. So you should be able to find this info out.

That’s what’s putting me off, since there always talking about it on the radio saying what a killer it is. I’m sure he must have to by law to have a building tested if he’s looking to have people working in there anyhow. You would have thought it was in his interest. I really don't want miss out on this but my life worth more.

    It’s just an electrical job.

That’s good then because he must know this and therefore addressed it.

    Cheers

whats the actual job,? total rewire?,unless you start ripping stuff out and disturbing structures then normal precautions for working around this stuff, filtered masks
wet drilling etc.should be sufficient protection for your health risks, you arnt responsible for safe disposal etc.you dont know if this is the problem yet?
could be any number of reasons other contractor not interested, not least, credit history!!

It is a part rewire. I might be thinking about the wrong thing here, because everything will be removed prior to any electrical work being done, unless the ceiling and walls contain it. As said the other contractor might know something about his credit history. Who knows?

The company I contract to has just sent me on an asbestos awareness course, its very scary when you know how little exposure can do damage. How many times in the past have you thought if I hold my breath while I drill the hole everything will be ok. On a serious note there should be a register showing the location and type of asbestos in the property, ask for it and read it before giving the job the once over.
