Life is too short to remove the old lath and plaster, Captain. Just locate the joists and overboard the existing ceiling with 1/2" plasterboard and skim. Two days maximum.

Looche is assuming that the ceiling joists are not all over the show and the reason for replacement is so that leveled joists are not being screwed to the side of the existing wonky'uns!

Polish plumbers would do this job for around £500 and a cup of tea. :)

Yes the room is empty , no carpets nuthin. I could overboard, butthere is a large sag in the ceiling, which I thought was the plaster comming away slightly. I don,t want to overboard, it doesn't seem like a proper job. I don't think any poles would do it for 500.

You could batten at 90 degrees to the joists and then board.

Advantages are that the battens will be at the correct centres.

You can pack the battens to level the ceiling.

You can leave the existing plaster there to add some sound insulation.

You don't have the incredibly dusty job of ripping the old ceiling down.
