LABC Approved Inspectors List

Just been looking at renewing my membership to NAPIT and in the course of a couple of phonecalls have established an exciting development. New legislation is due out (Oct 2010) that will allow LABC's to appoint selected approved inspectors to officially inspect third party Part P installations on their behalf. NAPIT are including an application form to go on the approved list for applicants reneing from this month onwards. A one-off admin charge will get you life time membership of the list and you must renew C&G 2391 every 5 years. I will need to retake mine this year but this has to be a step in the right direction.

Anyone else aware of this on the other schemes?

Don't rush too quickly to spend your money UP - I shall be forming a lobby group to get the new Govt to dilute the more onerous and bureaucratic aspects of Part P straight after the election on May 6th.

Its less than £30.00 to register on the list, a one-off fee. Earn that back in one hour :)

    an exciting development..........

Roy dear, don't get too excited about that apparent opportunity, because I can tell you there's little money to be made from such inspections and that the work is very patchy.

I've been doing these inspections since 2005 for a neighbouring council and two others in East Anglia. One of those two wrote to me three months ago saying that they would soon be reviewing 'our contract' in order to save money. This was due to that approach from NAPIT, which offered a cut-price service.

The other two LABCs have said that they plan to stick with the 'devil they know', on account of the fact that my outfit has looked after their council buildings and properties since the 1960's - including major refurbs of the actual BC offices.

It's all very well having the right technical qualifications for these inspections, but that isn't nearly enough. You'll also need a great deal of patience and tact when dealing with the installer, whether he's a gifted DIY'er or a competent (but unregistered) electrician. You'll also need to turn a blind eye to certain minor faults if you want to return a very meagre profit. Bear in mind that your fee cannot exceed the council's fee for a Building Notice, and that they also need to show a small profit after they've paid you (some 60 days after your visit!).

The only reason I carry on this farce, is to provide a complete 'service' to maintain our long-established links with the council(s).

No doubt, someone will pick me up on my 'turning a blind eye' statement, at which I'd be pleased to elaborate.

Don't do it Roy, there's no kudos and very little reward.

It's just another totally pointless exercise.

The LAB can appoint anyone they want to carry out the work, approved or not, 20 years experience or a 5 day wonder course.

    Complete waste of time.

I try to avoid, when I can, doing inspections. It is not profitable work for me personably speaking.

That might be true in theory, Coloumb, but I doubt that you can name a single Local Authority that has ever employed an inspector who's not a member of either the ECA or NICEIC.

Do tell me, if you know differently, and I'll check it out.

What gave you that idea, Col?

You won't find any suggestion of that, in my many posts here. Have a little browse, dear.

Perhaps you've presumed that, having read my low opinion of that pathetic Part P debacle?

I've been enrolled for more almost forty years, sweetheart - but I really don't mind if you'd like to continue to try to teach me how to suck eggs - it amuses me.....

this is a bit irratating. We may have dis-agreed on part p (which I also think stinks but is something you choose to ignore on a regular basis) but I don't recall ever disagreeing with you on anything to do with lectrics.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

Don't take on so, Coloumb dear.

In spite of our past differences on the 'Letter of the Law' regarding Part P - and the status of the Approved Document 'P' etc... I'm still quite fond of you, being as you are a senior member here.....

Perhaps we can continuue this conversation when you've sobered up?
