I have promised my son I'd have a look at his Punto, sounds like the cambelt has snapped. It's a '91 8 valve engine. Does anyone know if they snap safe or is engine likely to be trashed? Also how long should I allow to replace (done belts before but not on this car) Thanks people!
Mmmmm 01/91 to 04/91 Every 24K - check and replace if necessary Every 36K - replace. The 93-99 Engine is deemed:- Engine deemed as a FREEWHEELING ENGINE valve to head damage may be minimal in event of timing belt failure. Cant' find data on 91 Engine, so I'd get a compression check done on all cylinders first. If that passes, he's a lucky lad ! Cheers
Thanks Bassrock, I was hoping you were around! Just sopken to a mechanic mate of mine who wasn't sure if it would have damaged the engine or not but he did say it's a easy job on the Punto. For the cost of a belt I think I'll put one on and try my (his) luck. Thanks again Bassrock.
Woo hoo it's fixed. Took me ages because I couldn't find the timing marks but got there in the end. Tensioner had seized causing belt to snap.
Superb, you've saved a fortune, gained a car and ...... in 36,000 miles time you can change the belt for him again. PS: hope son is taking you out for a few pints.
Cheers Bassrock...it was a * to do, there were marks on crank pulley and cam pulley but none on either housing! Bloody Fiats, it took hours and I got sunburn...my son owes me a few pints but I'll end up buying lol [Edited by: admin]
