    Heating won’t kick in

Despite the room temperature, my heating will only kick in when the thermostat is manually increased. Initially, regardless of the room temperature, it won’t kick in until I turn it to roughly 21 degrees. It will then cut out, I presume when it thinks the place is up to temperature. It then does...

How to clean fleas out of radiators ?

So, we moved into a new flat and the radiators are filthy. The radiators aren’t the type where you just slide the side off, they have screws on top. I can’t figure out how to take it apart to clean it thoroughly so I’ve bought a radiator brush. The only problem is, the heating was broken up...

problems figuring out rad order in a small flat

I paid to have a new boiler power flush and balance. On the day a chemical flush was used. A magna clean was also fitted. But they never balanced the system and stopped responding to calls. I include a picture of the layout. all pipework from the rads goes into corner boxes and up except the...

    Radiator not getting hot

Hi, I have one radiator in the house (not even on the top floor) that is not getting really hot, but we've realised now, that if we close other radiators on that floor, it gets hotter. So it must be that the maze of pipes (22mm and 15mm) wasn't probably done correctly and there is not enough...

    Time to repipe house?

Hi, First time posting and a novice looking for advice! We moved into a semi detached 4 bed house 2 years a go. For 2 winters on the trot we’ve had to flush our central heating system. First year the rads were taken off and flushed with a hose. This seemed to work for a while. Second year a...

    Underfloor heating weirdness (years later)

Hi all, this has now been going on for nearly 3 years, if not 4. My underfloor heating doesn’t work properly, it hasn’t been heating up properly, and my plumber has tried to convince me that it is. I’ve sat with it this afternoon and I’m 100% sure he’s wrong. When I say “it only gets warm when...

    Underfloor Insulation

Hi all, I am looking to install some insulation between the joists under the suspended ground floor of my house. Ive decided to go with Rockwool after doing some research online and weighing up the pros/cons of different methods. The plan was to create a mesh 'hammock' for the Rockwool to sit...

Not sure this is the right place, but here goes... Recently moved in as 2nd tenants to a new build, it has a Vaillant combi boiler, and dual zone thermostats - never had 2 thermostats before. Whilst the boiler is in the kitchen there seems to be thermostat labeled pipes and control in the...

1" straight male to male hex brass fitting imperial?

I have taken a boiler out of a Rayburn and need renew the fitting. It has a straight male to male threaded fitting where a 28mm brass compression fitting will screw onto it. It seems though that the thread on the fitting coming from the boiler is possible an imperial one which might explain why...

Hi all, Per title - recently went on holiday for a week and we came back to the worst smell of damp in the ensuite bathroom! We’ve never noticed before - new build, moved in early April 2022 as a brand new property. We always have the window open (or at the very least the window vent) and...

    Rayburn Oil Pipe Size

The oil that comes through the copper pipe connects to a steel pipe about 10cm long that goes to the burner but that pipe has a bore of around 8mm, is this too big? I cleaned all the carbon build up in that short bit of pipe expecting to reveal a hole of around 4mm not 8mm?

    Rayburn Water Tank?

Does a rayburn that heats water in this case to one radiator and the cylinder I think have a separate header tank? I haven't looked properly yet but I can see the over flow from the rayburn goes to the main water tank?

Large holes through joists - advice please?

A tradesman has drilled through joists for heating 22mm pipes. One joist looks particularly bad as I think they are too large holes as shown in photos. I need some advice to feel reassured if this is normal and can leave it as it is or if the joist needs some reinforcement with steel plates or...

    Oil Boiler Size

Hi I am about to order a new oil combi boiler and installation, and I am confused over what size boiler. I got three quotes, two of which quoted in person and said two different sizes. One suggested 18/25 and the other a 26/35. Putting aside the cost difference of the boiler, the engineer...
