    Mot type 1

I am going to start my garden ready for the summer, I am looking at building a sleeper retainer step up (2 sleepers high) the sleepers will be dug in 50mm so I will have to infill around 305mm. (Leaving thickness for artificial grass 30mm and a 15mm base layer of sand to assist drainage) Should...

Help Please - has my mums garden been done by cowboys? The works looks and feels sub par to me

Approx 20m sq of grass removed, some brick borders laid (8m), and gravel and pavers to replace the grass. Done at my mums 2 weeks ago and 4 loose pavers already, and the border isn’t close to level. Plus on lifting the pavers theres no sand underneath, and looks like not even close to enough...

6m Wide Doors and a step

I have 6m wide doors and I'd like to build a brick and paver step leading to the garden which is flush with the threshold. This would bring it to the same level as the DPC. Is this OK? Thanks

    Paving slurry in spots

Hi all I’ve just had a patio installed, they were laid on a full bed or mortar, but rather than painting on the base of the whole slab the contractor poured slurry in spots. I’m worried this is going to lead to staining. it’s sandstone paving do I need to be worried? thanks

    Grab hire lorry

Does anyone know a rough estimate for a 16-tonne (approx) grab hire lorry and the length of the arm? I'm doing serious garden landscaping to our house and have removed a lot more junk (stones, bricks, bed frame, broken glass, tins, intact Gordon's Gin bottle, and a ton of surface level...

    Retaining Wall

We've had to have a concrete sloped bank taken away leaving a steep soil bank. Need to do something about it quick as we're in the middle of having the drive done! It's not something we'd budgeted for in the project so cheaper is better. It's 0.8m at its highest and down to 0.4 by the end owing...

    Concrete Path Tiling

We have an old concrete path in the back garden. It's in relatively good condition. Would I be OK laying terracotta tiles on top? (would obvs make sure they're thick enough/weather proof) If not, is there anything else that could be done with the path short or ripping the whole thing up and...

    Struggling with patio preparation

Firstly, I have taken up old flags that were laid on perfectly fine sub base and looks like it's concrete on the top. Can I re lay Indian stone flags over this part? Secondly, I'm also extending the patio area, so wondering how deep I need to dig down from next to the top of the old concrete...

Hi, im building a deck for my neighbour. Best base for a hot tub?

I'm waiting delivery of a 2x2m 5 person hot tub. 370kg without water, roughly 1650kg with, adding 5 people at average 75kg makes it just over 2 metric tonnes. I want a floating base (if possible) to sit on an existing paved patio which as you would imagine is not level enough for a hot tub...

    You learn from your mistakes

I've been working as a labourer for a company that does gardens/landscaping among other things and I'm ready to set up on my own. The company I work for got an enquiry about tidying up a garden but they are booked up so said I could take it on as my own. The guy who deals with the company's...

Limestone flags - cement staining under sealant

Hey! I've just had my garden flagged with black limestone, it's been sealed with Sika black limestone sealant. Some of the flags are okay but by the gate, they're heavily cement stained, and some of the grout has changed colour (from grey to white!) Here's a couple of photos...

20mm gravel instead of MOT Type 1 Hardcore as patio base?

Hi guys, we're laying some paving blocks down for our patio, and just wondered if we can use 20mm shingle instead of MOT type 1 as the first base under the grit/sand? Thanks!

Please help! Type 1 MOT Sand

Hi, We've just laid a patio in our garden, and the people we got the sand from, just gave it to us not in a bag, so it was loose on our drive and we took it round to the garden and put it on the grass. We've managed to get what's left into Rubble bags to put on Facebook for free, but how do I...

Hi I’m new round these parts. I hope someone will be able to help me with an electrical specific question I have. I’m about to start a landscaping project in my garden. Porcelain paving

Hi, This may sound a bit daft, we have just had a 53 sqm concrete pad made. We are looking at putting porcelain paving on top. Just a thought, would it be possible to use external glue on the paving slabs and stick this to the pad to make it an easier job? And then fill the gaps between tiles...

Old Concrete Slabs under MOT Type 1 Hardcore

Hi All, I am laying a gravel driveway and planning to to lay 100mm MOT Type one as a sub-base. I have a few “Hefty” old concrete slabs left over from the old driveway. Can I essentially bury under the slabs the 100mm of MOT Type One? Will this cause issues later on I.e sinking (not that it...

To compact or not to compact?

In levelling my garden, I have shifted one load of soil from the main area, to the back - which, having previously been a slope, is now encased by four walls. The reason for encasing it in the four walls, was to allow us to level the main area, and dump any leftover soil there to bring it up...

Gravel boards as artificial grass edging?

Using lockdown to do some DIY and install some artificial grass. Have made a lot of mistakes along the way (getting the rest of the garden sorted) so would like to try and avoid any major f-ups going forwards. Are timber gravel boards (staked in) suitable for use as edging? Three sides of the...

Tarmac v Hanson cold lay macadam?

Tarmac v Hanson (sounds like the big fight) Any thoughts on which is better? (Job needs infill of 30mm deep 40cm x 1.6m gap - a couple of bags) Planning to use this bagged cold lay (for first time) and I can get either from the merchants.
