    Recommendations for filler

Hi all the concrete or filling between the slabs have deteriorated over time and have broken off. Can anyone recommend the most efficient (if any) filler for this job? Any tried and tested products? Best way to tackle the job?

    Patio help

Looking for some advice please after being let down twice by local tradesman. I want to patio this area for foot traffic and I’ve dug down to get rid of the soil but then I’m hitting concrete I think as it’s solid. It’s mainly the edges but I assume that’s the concrete bed around the edging...

How best to roughen the edges of natural stone slabs that have been cut using a cut off saw

When I lay natural stone slabs, if I cut the slabs, I use a chisel to chip the cut edge to make it rougher rather than clean and straight. Whilst this does work, I feel there must be a better way of doing this. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better way to achieve a rougher edge?

Sloping Patio towards house & DPC

Hi all, I’ve recently moved into a new build timber-framed, brick-clad house which has a small dry-laid concrete patio at the rear. During this wet summer I’ve noticed that water pools towards the house. A spirit level on the slabs confirms the same (but to which degree I’m not sure). I’ve...

    Opinions please on patio repointing

I've a small, slabbed yard which I intend to repoint before painting over, my only real constrictions being weather and time. I've studied two methods, dry brushing and directly applying wet mortar and to my mind, dry brushing appears to be considerably easier. Is their any particular...

    Patio slabs

Hi I’m living on my own and I have recently had patio slabs laid by a builder. There is quite a large surface area laid and I have counted 21 slabs that can be lifted after being laid. Builder flattened the ground with a Wacker plate and laid slabs on a wet mix. The slabs are not rocking but are...

Tree root in the way of new slabs!

Morning all. I'm a DIY'er here, so excuse the lack of knowledge and experience! I am planning to lay new slabs in 2 corners of my garden that were previously paved with random bricks and slabs of different sizes with some sandstone slabs, but when I pulled up the old slabs and started to dig...

    Porcelain Slabs on Dry Mix?

I have a small patio job coming up which we will be using porcelain tiles on (20mm thick). I usually use a dry/semi-dry mix and screed out a large area then place the slabs into position and lightly tap into place (I just personally find it easier than wet mix) would this method be okay for use...

    Slab Cut Around Manhole

I've reached a challenging part of my patio - the recessed manhole cover. The challenge is, I've been left with a thin sliver of 5cm, as in this photo: Which option should I go with? #1. Cut 1 whole single slab in a U shape as the blue in the photo above. This surely risks the 4cm thin bit...

Hi I’ve recently had a sandstone patio laid on compacted type 1 with wet bed by a landscaper. The last few days white marking is appearing on the slabs, if the slab is wet, these marks appear back really quickly, has anyone any idea what they are, what caused them and if they can be removed...

    Porcelain paving

Hi, This may sound a bit daft, we have just had a 53 sqm concrete pad made. We are looking at putting porcelain paving on top. Just a thought, would it be possible to use external glue on the paving slabs and stick this to the pad to make it an easier job? And then fill the gaps between tiles...

Old Concrete Slabs under MOT Type 1 Hardcore

Hi All, I am laying a gravel driveway and planning to to lay 100mm MOT Type one as a sub-base. I have a few “Hefty” old concrete slabs left over from the old driveway. Can I essentially bury under the slabs the 100mm of MOT Type One? Will this cause issues later on I.e sinking (not that it...

Calculating Fall for new Patio (Beginner)

Hi All, Any advice on calculating this correctly would be of great help. I have a space of land that is 31.4ft(l) by 9 ft (w). I want to patio this with slabs and have been trying (and failing) to figure out the correct fall needed from the top to the bottom for drainage. I have read that the...

    Remove dug in stone slabs!

Hi, Help! My garden has a small wall made of stone slabs, say a foot wide, a foot high and 3 inches deep. I need to remove 2 of them. I have easy knocked off the top layers but the bottom ones are stuck in as they have been dug in for some kind of foundation for the wall, about 2 inches deep...

    Blue Circle Slablayer for patio?

My next job is to lay a 4x4m patio. I'm going to do a 100mm compacted sub base but was looking at using slablayer instead of a 10:1 bedding mix, just because it seems a little easier. The slabs I'm using are Natural Sandstone which are around 20mm thick. Just wondering if anybody had any...

    Drainage from Slabs
