Selling council houses didn't create a shortage, most of the people living in them would have stayed anyway, what it did do is give the poorer members of society an opportunity to accumulate some equity. That concept doesn't appeal to lefties because their followers became better off and could live in comfort in their own homes, just look how ex-council houses look better maintained and tidier than those still rented.
