28mm Honeywell 3-port valve, mechanism sounds smooth but makes a loud clunk when switching flow from one way to the other at the end of the transfer. Only happens in one direction.

any ideas as to the cause and fix?

Try manually moving the valve using the lever. Does it make the same noise ? Alternately, remove head and try move the valve by hand. If all appears smooth when moving it manually, it’s the actuator, else it’s the valve body itself. Replace defective part as repair is rarely successful but check the spring in the actuator. Also check if the micro switch is not jammed.

This is not an uncommon fault. When switching from HW or Mid position to heating only, the pump keeps running and the flow gives the ball a nudge to the closing port. I doubt a new actuator will cure it. You could try a new ball , but this involves drain down.
