I went to put a fan vent through a upvc soffit last week. Drilled pilot hole, through plastic then straight through asbestos the plastic was hiding.

You're not supposed to say that, Extendo!
The houses part of a housing scheme were built around 1975/80 I did wonder at the time ,but thought Nah! surely they wouldn't use asbestos ,it even had a bad press in the eighties, could it be anything else, it was brittle like asbestos ,,,, doomed I say.

    But, how much Asbestos?

A few short sniffs, just the once or ongoing on a regular basis?

LD you get two distinct types of asbestos the one that they used for soffits and garage roofs was much more stable and less likely to cause harm. Unless you drilled a very specific size of hole through it, think it was 4" if you drilled them you are screwed, oh oh ;)

  13. My understanding of asbestos is that there's no clearly defined link between exposure to it and resultant illness.

What there is is a broad trend in that a higher proportion of those people with prolonged exposure to it get ill than those whose exposure is minimal or non-existant.

This means that there is no exposure level that can be deemed safe. One person can work in an asbestos mine (yes, raw asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined) for 40 years and never get ill while another person can walk through Paddington station underneath the asbestos lined roof supports once in their life and be dead from an asbestos related illness within 5 years.

Hence the caution from HSE, particularly in respect of the good folk in your trades who see more of it than the general population.

Though why it's suddenly back on the political agenda today, when there must be less asbestos around now than at any time in the last 100 years remains a mystery to me.

All of that said, I had a mate's dad who'd been an electrician and he died from an asbestos related illness in his fifties.

Like I said, it ain't a straightforward problem.
