Have just re-read your first post and you don't mention whether you have an rcd protecting the socket circuit. This is a must especially in the out house also if the plumbing in the utility room is copper then this should be bonded to earth terminal in mini cu.

this assumes pvc twin and earth if not replace it!

firstly cable sizes
at least 4mm main cu-garage cu
at least 2.5mm for sockets
at least 1mm for lights

bear in mind that these are areas in square milimeters not diameters if you are unshure i suggest going somewhere that sells cable by the metre and buying a meter of each to compare with

also what is ahppening to the earth in the junction box?

and finally the single you mentioned needs to be either double insulated or in conduit!

Hi Tony,
There isn't an RCD protecting any circuits as far as I can see - and certainly not one in the outhouse. Do you suggest I put one in then ? Is it relatively easy to do ?
...(goes away to check books!) :)

As for the piping - yes, it is copper. At the moment the separate earth that comes into the outhouse from the main house is run to the pipe but that is all. Should I also run the Circuit cable earth that goes into the mini cu to the pipe ? At the moment it is just connected to a terminal inside the mini-cu (had the mini cu apart today).

Thanks for your continuing help!

Cheers plugwash! (interesting name!) :)

Yes, all OK on the cable size front.

I'm gonna use two junction boxes now for the lights and will use a dedicated JB terminal for earthing as opposed to the chocbox used inside the single 4-term JB to connect earths together in the existing setup.

i would suggest we dont go there on the name subject, after all i wouldnt sugest washing plugs is a great idea ;)

washing dismantled plugs to get the dirt off is fine (which was what initally got me the name (in combination with an older nickname of pugwash)

what really firmed it up though was when i washed the socket end of an extention lead and forgot to unplug the other end first

i also once absent mindedly stuck the end of a cassete mains lead in my mouth

this was all a long time ago though (think i was about 12 or so at the time possibly younger)

Arr, I see - wasn't that the kids programme featuring young "MasterBates" and a whole load of gay "seaman"! ;)

And destined to be a professional electrician no doubt! :)

Pro-Spark - would this unit from Screwfix be a suitable replacement for the mini-cu in the outhouse ?

Ref: 63138 GARAGE UNIT 40A/30MA RCD +16A,6A MCB

Cheers,

Hi J-o-A

Without reading the previuos 26 threads (:() the unit you describe is an ideal accoutrement to append to the inside face of said outhouse wall as it is suitably rated in both RCD and MCB terms.

Hi RSS
Thanks for replying. I thought it would be OK but wasn't sure if the 16A MCB would be enough for the socket circuit.
I shall now order the said unit and append it to the interior wall of the outhouse structure prior to the continuation of the wiring installation! ;)
Cheers mate
Michael
