About to refurb my stairs and my stringer is 1 1/2". Everything seems to be geared towards 2" I think it'll look daft having the baserail overhanging the stringer.

Do you know any suppliers that produce baserails for this size stringer?

If not what are my options?

standard baserail for 40mm spindles that protrude beyond stringer and either leave as it is or you can add quarter moulding strip on each side,

Yeah, as xednim mentioned, It's normal for the base rail to overhang. It's not normal to put quadrant on the inside of the stringer though but it's not uncommon to see quadrant on the outside overhang.

I don't know why smaller sizes aren't available:(. Perhaps there are some more specialist ones on the net? I just had to make one up myself as there would have been a ridiculous overhang on the balustrade I have just made otherwise.

Stringer is about 32mm thick, base rail around 70mm at the bottom so about 19mm overhang on each side which is completely normal.

It may be normal but does not mean its right. Its so easy for one's foot to catch under the base rail when walking up the stairs when they stick out that far. I bet they didn't stick out like that in olden days when they were all hand made!

My apologies, you just seemed a bit unsure and so I was just letting you know how it's done in all new standard houses these days.
Never heard of anyone catching their foot on it though. Our house has a 'normal' overhang and even though my wife finds a clumsical hazard out of anything she has never had any problems with the base rail.

I agree - right is definitely not the same as normal.
