I have a Baxi Bermuda 551 that's performed impeccably for years. Over the last month it's been tripping out.
Called in my favourite C/H engineer who changed the FFD thermocouple, cleaned out the pilot jet and ensured the thermocouple bulb was immersed in the pilot flame. Put it all back together and it worked fine for a day, then it started tripping again. Called engineer back and just in case it was suspect, changed the thermocouple again.
Under test all went well. Re-assembled and almost as soon as the front plate (the one with the viewing window) was put in place, it tripped again when the burner lit.
New gas valve fitted! Yet another thermocouple and its tip bent - no, it didn't crack - to make doubly sure the flame impinged properly on it. Again all worked fine under test but within an hour it'd failed again.
The puzzling thing is, the pilot will stay alight all night and the thing only trips after the main burner starts up. During the day, once the pilot's established, it will remain alight again, until the burner lights.
Please can anyone explain why a boiler that's worked so well for so long should suddenly start behaving like this and if you can suggest a remedy that works, I'll be forever in your debt
