Which is the best varnish to buy for garden decking?
I would never use a varnish for exterior wood. Some of the varnish penetrates the wood, and some of it sits on top of the wood. Wood expands and contracts with the varying seasons and humidity levels, and this puts a lot of stress on the varnish, resulting in cracking and flaking. This means you have to refresh the varnish regularly but each refresh involves a huge amount of sanding and preparing.
Rather use decking oil, which penetrates, nourishes and protects the wood, and even makes the wood distasteful to wood eating insects and even to vegetation like lichens, mosses and moulds.
Our host stocks numerous decking oils of varying prices.
Look at Barrettine-decking-oil, it's solvent based, & a very good product.
