best engine

my two pence worth. how about the merlin engine as fitted in the spitfire, hurricane, mustang and lancaster? still used today in prop aircraft racing - awesome.

at the other end of the spectrum the honda horizontal engine as used in c90s etc is, i believe, the most produced engine of all time. they just keep going.

for car engines the mercedes 601 to 606 series diesel engines just keep going, i know one coming up for 500,000 miles!!!

had a honda CRX 1.6 many years ago. best car i have ever had, used to hit the red a 7000rpm, little flyer it was!

A great diesel engine was the Fordson Perkins tractor engine. With three cylinders and a 2000cc capacity these engines were built to last. I have one and it is nearly 50 years old and runs like a dream.

DWD

hardly surprising when they only do 30 miles a week!

What do you think the best engine ever made is?

My vote would have to go to a Ford V8 powerstroke.
Loads of Torque, power & one of the most reliable
engines ever made.

Sick

STEAM engine

hemi sound well good

You had to go back over two years for the last previous response on the topic.

IWS: It Was Sad (of you) :(

For the best sound I'd go with the BRM H16, or maybe Honda's 250 '6' that Hailwood rode. One of my favourite road car engines was the Ford 1500 pre-crossflow, with the twin choke Weber. For its day (40 years ago, I'm suddenly feeling very old) beautifully responsive and economical, and even better when mated with the 2000E gearbox.

My persoanal favourite is the BMW M42, 16 valves, two chain driven cams. My 15 year old 318is has done 167k and it is still fairly nippy and reliable.

The Sterling engine is very good now the wobble shaft has been invented. But the Jet engine must take the lead my vote goes to Frank

For noise - BRM V-16; 1500cc, all those tiny little pistons whizzing up 'n' down - lovely!

Coventry Climax portable fire pump engine - just runs and runs and runs - provided it's treated right!! (Even in a Hillman Imp!!)

What about the Buick/Rover V8 - or the Jaguar 6 cylinder twin cam lump - too many variants of both to mention!!

What about the VW Beetle engine.
Air cooled Horizontally opposed flat 4.
Simple design & goes for ever & ever & ever...oh & you only need about 5 spanners to fully strip it !

This would take some beating!

Check out the pix at the bottom of the page! :O
