    Hi there,

I am planning to make a raised vegetable bed using new tantalised softwood sleepers. I will be using the 250 x 125 x 2400mm sleepers that a nice and chunky and the walls will be approx. 600mm high.

My questions is, what is the best foundation for them to sit on?

Our top soil is only 100-150mm thick before we hit sandy clay. Some of the options I have been thinking of so far:

1- Strip back top soil and just lay sharp sand layer for sleepers to sit on.
2- Strip top soil and lay dry mix concrete layer slightly wider than sleepers.
3- Dig down and pour substantial wet concrete foundations slightly wider than sleepers.

Does anyone have any guidance on this?

can't see the point of any founds, just timberlok the sleepers together and stack them up - leave the base open to the soil below for a good free draining bed
