I need to take the newel posts and stringers on our stairs back to bare wood and make good years of overpainting and knocks. I'll use paint stripper first but am wondering what the best electric sanding tool will be best to get the last of the paint off and sand it back smooth. I've only really used a Mouse type thing and manual sanding before but never had to go back to bare wood.
Orbital sander is better than a belt sander because it will not take lumps out of the timber. You might also want a small detail sander. Some of the woodworking folk on here might have better ideas
Heat gun safer. And use decent paint stripper,a lot available in the sheds, lacks strength now, compared to the old products that use to be available & contained Dichloromethane. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Paint-st...909080&hash=item2ee834081b:g:CXAAAOSw5ZBWQH0a
An Electric heat gun available from a lot of outlets for around £20. Practice on some scrap to get work out the optimal distance to use from the surface and speed of movement
Many thanks for the advice chaps. Will try heat gun and orbital sander. Wish me luck - I have very little patience with this kind of thing.
