Underneath the carpets in the hallway and living room I have what looks like black floor tiles about 9" square and stuck down with bitumen. they are about 1/8" thich.
They finish about 1/2" short of each wall where the carpet grippers are.

Are these actually floor tiles or come sort of damp proofing as I would like to get rid of them.

If I could get rid of them how should I deal with the residual bitumen other than chipping it away and skimming the floor.

The house was built in 78

These are on concrete floor, and matt black, just wanted reasurance that they're not there for a reason, can't think why anyone would want this sort of thing in a living room.
