Bottle trap leaking between locking nut and adjustable tube

Hi All,

As the title suggests, I'm experiencing a leak between the locking nut and adjustable tube of my bathroom bottle trap.

I have a couple of traps, done my absolute best to ensure all nuts are tight, waste is tightly connected, but seemingly nothing is preventing the water coming through when the tap is running.

The space is exceptionally tight, so fitting it all has been particularly difficult and I'm unsure if it's something I've done wrong, or if the traps I have tried are faulty.

The inlet is 32mm (basin waste 32mm), outlet pipe is 40mm. I'm currently trying a Euroflo 32/40 universal bottle trap with adjustable height, though I may not need the adjustable version if that is the problem...

Any advice on things to try/test would be most appreciated. One thing that crossed my mind was shortening the adjustable tube since it's fully housed in the trap, but unsure if it would make a difference.

Water is a funny thing when trying to identify the exact spot of the leak - can appear to be leaking from one area but infact, leaking elsewhere and just collecting where you think the leak is ! But not saying this is the case here

Dry the pipework, have plenty of light on the work area and with tap running, and dry paper towel, pinpoint the exact area that’s leaking - apologies if you’ve already done all of this

Try a McAlpine trap, has a wide blue seal on the adjustable section that makes it literally impossible to leak from this section

If the adjustable section is fully inserted into trap and not extended at all, then yes, would shorten it as can cause the sink to drain slowly (I’ve found with a bottle trap at least)

Thanks DIYDave, I have given the dry paper towel test a go but I'll do it again to be 100% certain, better to be confident with it.

I think cutting the adjustable section will be worth it, otherwise I'll look into a fixed connection point with adaptor for 32/40mm connection.

Will feedback when I've given it a go on Monday (earliest chance I reckon)!

So update, I bought a McApline C10 fixed neck trap, and took the 32mm-40mm coupler from the previous trap I installed, added some PTFE tape to it, and *touch wood* it's not leaking! I've run some water and kept an eye on it, paper towel check as it went, and checked it 15 mins after stopping the tap and still dry. Been an hour so far so will check again before bed but so far all seems to be good!

Thank you for your advice and tips, this experience has cost a bit but has saved me more in overall costs so I am most grateful!
