Bring Back Conscription!

The Government have announced that if they win the next election they will re introduce a kind of conscription for 18 year olds both male and female, either the Armed Forces or charity work. While this may be particularly popular with the hard right, it will alienate most young voters, many older voters who have children coming up 18 and older voters who have grandchildren. Unlike in previous generations of grandparents, this generation, me included, were not subject to conscription and do not have the attitude of 'I did my National Service so you can, did me good'. I do not see this as a popular vote winning strategy for Sunak & Co. (unless that is I have missed WWIII on the horizon).

It is in place in Norway and there are limited places in their armed forces. Competition for a place is high and intense with selection and completion being a real plus on future CVs. My niece has been successful and looking forward to her 12 months service and may, if she enjoys it, enlist full time.

I wish her well in her career. However, it is her free choice, she applied and was accepted, not told she had to do it.

Total stupidity, they are just trying to keep the "dose of National Service will sort them out" brigade on side.
If you look at it, it is optional that or a few days "Community Service" so chances are more people will go to Rwanda than do it.
National Service, lets take a bunch of lazy wasters and teach them how to kill properly!;)

might actually be a good idea but I would say a non starter. Would this include the immigrants and anyone else entering the UK ilegaly or is it just for our own youngsters? Might be a step forward into getting rid of the softly softly aproach and attitude of todays yoof. Personally I would put all 18 year olds in jail if they refuse to go into the army or navy or airforce.

I enjoyed spending a couple of years playing with AFVs and playing games in the mess.

Interestingly when I was in the army you had to to carry cigarettes at all times in case a lady needed one and you would be court-marshalled if they were in a packet rather than a proper brass case.

I used to also always wear a smoking jacket and a monacle.

I had even bigger toys to play with occasionally - but only in four hour stretches. And they had bigger guns - 4.5"

I always remember being different to the other kids in my street, as a baby to get them to sleep their mothers used to take them out in their prams for a walk or a drive in the car to settle them down, my mother could only settle me by taking me to the local council depot and putting me in a cherry picker. I would only calm down after a height of 10 meters was reached.

bit off a strange comment really "conscription" or "national service"means uk citizens to become a british citizen from elsewhere requires a time off perhaps 5 or 10 years productive in this country to get your ticket
if you are in the country illegally you are not a uk citizen so not sure your ideas are well though through:rolleyes::D

Clearly wildcat was of the officer class ! But had the smoking bill gone through you would be court marshalled for carrying any,

Many countries across the world including a few in Europe have a period of military service. I believe in Switzerland you do your training but remain in the army till your fifties and what’s more keep your weapons in a safe place at home till you get decommissioned. I think they also attend a refresher course every year with longer sessions periodically. All employers are expected to make arrangements for their absence (as UK employers have to for reservists here)
