I'm hoping to get a loan for 10k so could someone recommend what car brands to look at. I did ask on another forum and every brand I mentioned they said I could get better but when I asked what was better they never replied.

The brands I was thinking about.

1. Dacia sandero.
2. Ford focus.
3. Mazda 2.

Hyundai i10. Or if you want cheap and reliable c1/108/aygo but stick to the 1.0

focus is pricey, dunno much about Mazda

Depends what you want but even today you’d get something reasonable for 5-7 k

I did think about an aygo but they don't have much room in the back for two kids

How old are the kids and how long is the typical journey

the aygo/c1/108 has Toyota power unit and most of the niggles are ironed out and easy fix. Note it’s a joint venture Toyota with Peugeot Citroen

I’d look at i10 if you want a bit more space

Toyota all the way, tho i did love my volvo, not many 440s still running now tho.
For 4k you could get a hiace, with decent milage an stick some seats in the back for the kids (i know nothing of family vehicles)

I have a Q3 automatic and I love it, I suppose you take a risk with any car and its reliability, buy off a reputable dealer and try get decent warranty

Seat or Skoda. VWs in everything but name. I'm on my third Seat and can't recommend them highly enough - great cars.

Any car with a Japanese badge on it! ;)
Exactly what I was going to suggest. A bit of research last time I bought a car (mazda) and anything Japanese were the least likely to break down or have major or expensive faults.
Incidentally I've had my mazda 3 from 6 months old and not had 1 single issue or mot failure in the 8 years I've had it. Apart from general wear and tear - brakes and tyres. Probably put the mokkas on that now!:D

Check out cost of services and replacement tyres. Having a local main dealer of whatever you choose can be useful especially if you go foreign. I've had and like Fords and Mazdas for reliability and running costs. VW Golf's too but you pay well for it.

Aside from personal preferences I would suggest sticking to the following

1) go for a popular model: means spares are available and plenty of garages can fix them

2) avoid complexity: so avoid the latest diesels that need adblue If you do short journeys and avoid the latest small cc three cylinder units that need turbocharging in larger vehicles.

Then choose something of the size you need and focus on the fuel economy as fuel prices will only go one way

In my experience every vehicle has a weak point that is more likely to fail so sticking to simple popular models means it is typically cheaper and easier to fix. For example the c1/108/aygo family are well known for failure of coil packs. These are 25 quid and 10mins to change so hardly an issue.

The bigger the car the more the insurance road tax fuel costs and costs of consumables like tyres. So I’d say keep it simple

Hi
Well I have had Toyotas for year.
When I retired in 1965 I bought a CAMRY
I sill have it 127K miles.
They are big and cheap second hand
Mine is 2.2ltr but being retired I dont do as many miles.
But look the up in google
Really worth a punt
