I am putting in a new kitchen soon and I was hoping to use some large pieces of cedar that I have as the worktop. However I've been told that it might not be suitable as a workop because the wood itself is toxic!! Surely once it has been sealed with oil or some other finish it will be ok though right? Do worktops need to be made from hardwood or is cedar ok to use Cheers
What sort of cedar, red cedar or cedar of Lebanon? Red cedar is probably OK, cedar of Lebanon will probably taint food, it would smell nice and no moths will go near it, but I'm not sure if I'd eat it.
As jasonb says it will prob be too soft for a worktop, its about as hard as balsa wood, at least most of what I have seen is.
