    Hi Guys,

Had an extension done recently which had an open fireplace installed.

The Builder has used a standard clay chimney pot which has no cover over it.

Now I know that there are loads of chimneys like that but I was just wondering what the pros & cons are of having a wire bird cage or a different pot fitted with side exit vents rather than a straight up exit route?

Well the cages are to prevent birds nesting and the side exit style pots are primarily to prevent down drafts blowing smoke back down the chimney.
This is only needed for those that are less than 600mm above ridge height.

Not only to stop birds nesting but also to stop them doing a Santa Claus

Just watch out for the strong words when the chimney sweep comes round, shoves his brush up and knocks your cap off, and he has to go fetch his long ladders/roof ladders to get up there and put the cap back on/in.

    :(

    Mr. Handyandy - really
