Evening all,
When we moved into out house just over a year ago - I noticed a hairline crack from the bottom window of the hallway window, but it just looked like some blown plaster as is a little hollow just below the sill. However last week the early morning sunlight hit it at an angle that made it look a lot worse so I decided to have a peak under the plaster at the render etc to see what it was like - I’ve attached some pics below. We have filled that bit now and are planning on keeping an eye on it. Is it likely to be settlement or doesn’t it look like something worse? The crack does continue along the wall in the bathroom (which can only be seen behind a removable panel and can’t get a decent pic).
Underneath this is the kitchen and there is no crack from where the ceiling meets the wall but there is a little lower down in what I would think is the place you’d expect it if joining the other crack - seems strange.
Finally I went to look at the external wall in the lean to garage the previous owner chucked up and I’ve never noticed it before but there is a vertical crack through one of the bricks, and it looks like someone has put in 7 to 8 new bricks in the wall, also the wall is minutely bowed from where the vertical crack is - not even sure if you can see it’s so small - but it definitely is. It is directly adjacent to the extractor hood on above the job.
To be honest we are suddenly worried about subsidence etc, and it’s taking ages to get anyone out atm. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. We think they may have put a vent in the wrong place or there was a vent there before so when moved it had to rebrick and haven’t done the best job.
Trying to be positive and thinking it’s just a 37 year old house and it’s probably nothing - but any thoughts welcome. J
