I have a damp meter - one where you stick the pins in a bit of firewood or whatever and get a reading. Below 20 and it's okay for burning. But I bought a new one and it has four settings, marked for four types of wood, mostly Asian species. My question is: why are they different if the reading is for dampness? By the way, none of the settings is equal to the reading on the first meter. It makes me wonder about all the jobs I've done checking plasterboard and building timber.

They are largely derided as a joke. And I found that out after I was dull enough to buy one a few years ago.
