DIY or not - venting hob extraction to outside through a double brick wall

    Hi there,
We have an Indesit hob extraction hood that is not vented to outside at the moment. It is quite old but still functions, at least 10 years old and was installed by previous owners of the house. We have been using it with charcoal and grease filters, but that doesnt really take care of steam/water vapours from cooking! As the outside temperature has dropped, we are getting condensation on every window!
So we want to fit an extraction kit so it vents outside - is it doable by DIY? Or best to find a professional?

DIY is doable. You’ll need to hire a decent SDS drill with a clutch and coring bit. Don’t attempt with a standard drill, it’s possible but the risk of injury is very high. Once you factor in the hire costs you may be as well paying someone. There are loads of people out there whose sole trade is coring holes. Pay for that part of the hob and fit the duct, wall vent, extractor etc. yourself.

Dont mind hiring a professional, but where to find one, seems everyone is super busy this year. This is the photo of the extractor.

Here’s one I did earlier as part of a kitchen fit. As other posters have said, you need a specialist diamond core drill hooked up to a 132mm core bit for a kitchen extractor - ideally with a vacuum dust extractor system otherwise it can get very, very messy. You can hire one, but in all honesty it isn’t really a job for the faint-hearted. A decent kitchen fitter will have the right kit, along with many plumbers/heating engineers - these guys use core drills for boiler flues. I’d suggest that your search commences with these two trades.

It is a fairly quick job for someone with the drill and core - provided you are not on te 17th floor of a tower block! Find a few kitchen/gas fitters and if you can be flexible, you might find one who would be willing to call in on the way home. Let them drill, you clear up the mess and do the rest.

Thanks everyone, I shall now try to fond someone to drill a hole.

Once that is done, just fit an extraction kit that could be bought from DIY or hardware store?
Would you put anything between the ducting and wall? I suppose nothing can be done to prevent thermal bridging?

You could always go old school and stitch drill/chisel. Perfectly possible to get a neat enough job with some care and patience

It’s standard practice. Our hosts sell various through wall vent kits. Foam between the duct and wall to seal it. The vent will of course bridge your insulation but is a normal penetration found in any building.
